It turned out exactly as Sullivan had feared; Burnham's style was embraced by the public and corporate America, while Sullivan's style was, sadly, ignored and forgotten.

And, thanks for the reminder about "Devil in the White City." This seems like the perfect time to dig it out and read it again. ; )Joy Neighborshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06517577511576153582noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9177479069889847827.post-42468141622428666442013-04-17T17:26:10.830-04:002013-04-17T17:26:10.830-04:00Thanks Sally! Very sad ending of such an otherwise magnificent life's work.
Growing up north of Richmond, Indiana I passed hundreds of times or more the railroad depot designed by fellow Chicago School leader, Daniel Burnhan. Burnham's most recent celebrity came as a result of Erik Larson's highly successful book, "Devil in the White City," the referenced city essentially designed by Burnham.

Your post, Joy, prompted me to dig deeper and I found, as you probably know, that Sullivan was deeply critical of the work, particularly on the Columbia World Exposition's famed "White City".

In the end, Burnham's classical style eclipsed in commercial popularity that of Sulivan's.Mark Thomashttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03108682481113952008noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9177479069889847827.post-68808087184921631542013-04-13T13:51:45.053-04:002013-04-13T13:51:45.053-04:00I really enjoyed this!
